A gorgeous day and a wonderful crowd met a distressing result at Robert E. Rich Sr. All-High Stadium, as FC Buffalo fell 2-0 to the Erie Commodores on Sunday.
An attendance of 1,051 saw FCB (1W-3D-1L) lose its first match of the season to their rivals from Pennsylvania. The Commodores are now 2W-1L on the year.
It didn’t take long for Erie to strike, as a cross came off FCB goalkeeper Andrew Coughlin’s hands and was trapped down by Kevin Kappock near his upper arm. Danny Deakin converted the fifth minute penalty to make it 1-0.
The Wolves didn’t have an answer outside of cries for a PK just before halftime on a similar hand situation in the Commodores’ box, and Erie’s counterattack led to numerous chances before Deakin salted away the match in stoppage time.
The Blitzers have a pair of mid-week matches, as the whole squad will get a chance to find its rhythm on Tuesday morning in Rochester against the USL’s Rhinos, and on Wednesday in Binghamton against the Thunder in the first leg of the Upstate NY Derby.
