Nevado Elliott broke a second-half deadlock with a goal at his college stadium, leading FC Buffalo to a 2-0 win over Erie Commodores in a gritty Erie County derby at Mercyhurst’s Saxon Stadium on Saturday.
A windy, warm evening in Erie saw the sides trade first-half chances with FCB a threat in possession and the Commodores looking dangerous off set pieces but stymied by the back line and keeper Andreas Queen.
FCB went ahead when Sergio Fernandez-Arango, one of the goal scorers from our season opener in Cleveland, worked down the right side and cut a shot on goal that was parried onto the doorstep. That’s where Elliott stepped in to snap a shot off a defender and over the line.
Blitzers head coach Ryan Osborne rang in three changes to attacking front three with 15 minutes to play and each member of the trio played a part in doubling the lead.
Umechi Akuazaoku’s strong hold up play helped build the ball left to right, where Jonny Tekie spun a perfect cross over the Erie defense and onto the foot of Rashaad Ogun. The ball settled, Ogun smashed it inside the far post to give the game it’s final score.
The FCB women now host Erie in the first-ever women’s Erie County derby comes Saturday night at 7pm at Dobson Field on the campus of D’Youville University. Twenty hours later, the men host Pittsburgh Hotspurs at Dobson in a bid to make it a six-point weekend.
Single-game tickets for both matches are on-sale through Soccerstub.
