Former FC Buffalo midfielder Ian McGrath has signed a contract with Nashville SC of the United Soccer League.
McGrath (New Lenox, Illinois / University of Evansville) joined FCB for the 2016 season under head coach Brendan Murphy, and played nearly every minute while scoring three goals and adding an assist.
“Ian was a natural leader during his time in Buffalo, and it’s been a joy watching his career continue to blossom at Evansville and now Nashville,” said FC Buffalo co-owner Nick Mendola. “He’s a ‘no-doubter’ for Nashville, we’re proud to know him, and also hopeful to see him up close on July 28 when his new team plays Toronto FC II in Rochester.”
Nashville SC coach Gary Smith, who won the MLS Cup as Colorado Rapids boss in 2010, said the following about Ian.
“Ian gives the team versatility in both midfield and defense. He has great competitive attributes and is dominant aerially. His college appearances showed that he also has an eye for goal from midfield.”
Nashville SC is slated to join Major League Soccer in either 2019 or 2020. Former Blitzers attacker Russell Cicerone plays in the USL with FC Cincinnati, while ex-FCB striker Asani Samuels was the USL Championship Game’s MVP in 2015.
