FC Buffalo head coach Brendan Murphy is reaching back to his mentor and his roots to snag two talented players to help complete the 2013 roster, as the former national champion goalkeeper at St. Lawrence has earned the commitments of two St. Lawrence University stars for this summer in junior Andrew Bednarsky and freshman Osvaldo Morales.

“As soon as I got the job here at FC Buffalo, I knew I was going to do everything in my power to bring in at least one or two guys from my alma mater,” Murphy said.
“Bob Durocher was my head coach when I played at St. Lawrence and he has been one of my greatest coaching mentors and most ardent supporters throughout my coaching career. I know for a fact that the level of training these guys have been getting under Coach Durocher is of the highest quality and I cannot thank him enough for his support in getting these two players to commit to FC Buffalo for the summer.”

A two-time regional All-American midfielder at St. Lawrence, Bednarsky has started all 62 games St. Lawrence has played since he arrived on campus from Hackettstown, N.J., where he was first team All-State and represented the United States national pool in South Africa. He has 6 goals and 12 assists for the Saints while holding down the midfield.

“Andrew Bednarsky has been a huge target for me since Day One and the club has worked very hard to give me the support necessary to bring him in,” Murphy said. “He is dynamic, creative and tough-as-nails. Brings a ton of big-game experience and a win-at-all-costs mentality to the team.
“Adding Bednarsky to our central midfield rotation is going to give us a huge boost of attacking flare as well as a player who plays both sides of the ball with tenacity and purpose. I am extremely excited about this signing.”
soc-m_slu-cu2Nicknamed “Ozzy,” the 20-year-old Morales impressed in his freshman year for the Saints, playing in 20 matches and picking up a goal and two assists while earning second team Liberty League honors. Prior to coming to the States for high school soccer in New Jersey, Morales represented Costa Rica at the U-17 level.
“Ozzy Morales is one of the fastest players we will see all season,” said Murphy. “His speed, acceleration and quickness on the ball will allow him to beat outside backs to the end line and provide great opportunities for cutbacks and quality serves into the box. Ozzy is a great person and has the type of positive attitude that will be infectious throughout the team.”
The additions were welcomed by the FC Buffalo staff.
“Coach Murphy is adamant about getting the best possible talent to represent his and our hometown,” said general manager Nick Mendola. “His optimism, pragmatism and dedication to the game and Buffalo gets our engines going every morning. We’re confident he’s assembling a team that will relentlessly pursue their potential while playing attractive, hard-nosed soccer.”
